On Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Spotify

I think Neil Young and Joni Mitchell have taken right course in pulling their music catalogs off Spotify. They did so in opposition to the vaccine misinformation being peddled by Joe Rogan on his podcast that streams on Spotify.

This is not an example of cancel culture. Quite the opposite. As Young stated on his website,

“I support free speech. I have never been in favor of censorship. Private companies have the right to choose what they profit from, just as I can choose not to have my music support a platform that disseminates harmful information.”

Joe Rogan remains free to cast doubt on the vaccine despite all the testing and research involved while taking Ivermectin, the animal deworming medication, when he got COVID. Young & Mitchell aren’t calling for Rogan to be silenced. They’ve simply opted not to participate by having their music draw listeners to Rogan and Spotify.

Good move!
